Re: My 1985 Bedford CF EV -- a passenger version!

Update on the saga of this van. John (my son) passed away in 2013. He was an electronic engineer and understood all the workings of this vehicle. I have kept the van garaged since then , but would like to get it back on the road. I know next to nothing about electronics, and hope that there may be s...

Advantage in going to a (slightly) higher voltage?

I'm thinking that at least one former electric CF owner on this forum tried running 6 or 12 volts higher than the "stock" 216 V. Flying John: was that you? Here's why I'm asking: I live in a hilly area. I've found the Griffon to be somewhat slow climbing hills out on the highway, where eve...

Re: Audio recording of my CF's chain drive

Sorry it took me over a month to reply! The Griffon was in the shop for three weeks waiting for some simple brake work (drum resurfacing) they just couldn't seem to get around to. But they finally got it done and brakes feel great now (and that right rear wheel doesn't tend to lock up anymore). John...

Re: Audio recording of my CF's chain drive

Thanks, John. I'll have to start looking for a local place that can make up a new
set of chains for me.

Was chain stretch a common problem on these vans?

My chain tensioner actually does have two springs - one for each "rubbing block" assembly.

Re: Audio recording of my CF's chain drive

It's completely possible that the chains have stretched. I do have a another set of chains that came from my parts donor Griffon, but I did not make any comparison while I had the chain drive apart. I'd actually suspect that those chains are stretched too, as they have at least as many miles on them...

Re: Audio recording of my CF's chain drive

Thanks for replying, John and Chris! It had been over a month since I posted that recording, and I had almost given up hope anyone would respond. Since I made that recording, I have mostly disassembled and then reassembled the chain drive. I did this mostly just to be sure there was nothing out of p...

Audio recording of my CF's chain drive

Ok folks -- here it is. An MP3 file containing a recording made by placing a small microphone just behind the chain drive case of my CF Electric and going for a drive. http://www.frontiernet.net/~jfletcher/griffon.mp3 Total running time is about 16 minutes. Here's a reference list of what the van wa...

Glad to hear you had good luck with the sealed gel cell batteries. I'm seriously thinking about replacing the current set of flooded batteries with Concorde Lifeline brand sealed 220 Ah AGM units. It would eliminate the need for a watering system, and would prevent the underside of my van from being...

Thanks for the reply, John. It's interesting that you mention the noise made by the chain drive. I've made an audio recording using a small microphone placed near the chain drive case. The recording was made during a ~20 minute drive over various conditions -- long stretch uphill, long stretch downh...

Fried cap in charger while driving -- thoughts on why?

Just wanted to post an update on the status of my CF electric. I have not made any audio recordings yet. Yesterday, I decided to spend the time working on swapping the controllers. That's no 10 minute job. My spare controller does work, once I replaced a blown commutation fuse (90 amp). Stupidly, I ...
