Importing/registering a non-type approved car.

Postby arsharpe » Wed Jan 02, 2008 10:21 am

Hi,

Has anyone imported and registered a non-type approved car into this country?

I am definately thinking of importing a Kangoo Electr'road from Geermany or possibly a Rav4 from the US.

I have some initial information at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Bu ... /index.htm

What is the process, costs, risks, etc ?

Can the registration happen after receipt in this country ?

What happens about MOT, etc ?

Regards,
Rob

In a word. Yes

in another Bureaucracy BIG TIME

Not impossible but be prepared for a fair amount of hassle and expense

DVLA link

The Kangoo will be alright as it has a European type certificate (it does, doesn't it?)

The RAV4EV may or may not, but if if doesn't then all that is required will be the Single Vehicle Approval test, which will be a breeze for a production vehicle.

My reply more-or-less ignored the original post, which had the same link in it. Sorry Robert.

qdos- why do you say it will be fraught? We all live in Europe. There should be no problem at all bringing a car in from another Euopean country.

However, I have no experience or expertise. I just travel hopefully.

The Rav4 ev was originally sold in the Channel Islands, so should have British type approval.

Hi Rob,

You'll need either type approval (EU type not country-specific) or an SVA. Neither should be a problem for the vehicle. You'll also need to prove vehicle age. If it's made before 1998 you won't need an SVA or type approval.

Nikki.

You'll need to change the lights to RHD beam and possibly the speedo too so it reads in Miles not Kms on the odometer (though some of the Renaults do have a trick which can change this if it's a digital LCD odometer. You'll also have to have a helpful person to speak to who's not a "jobsworth" Civil Servant

I can highly recommend the Bristol DVLA. They were very good with John Honniball's City El and have been great in the past with other friend's vehicles.
