Mind you its only 3000 homes in south london currently ?
New one on me, hadnt even heard about this on the grapevine, but the remotely read meters have been on the cards for years now .

There's a two-part article in Everyday and Practical Electronics magazine for a build-it-yourself energy meter (last month's edition and this month's). With a bit of modification and an optoisolator, this could be made into an energy meter with a PC connection for data logging.
Has anyone built one?

I have a copy of Everyday Electronics, Issue 1 somewhere (1971 I think it was). Also have a number of issues of Practical Electronics from 1979-1980 when the UK101 computer design was published. Sounds like I'd better get a copy of Part II of the energy meter article and start building...

My mother just got sent one of these devices in the post completely out of the blue for no apparant reason. She didn't want it so I've just put it on my mains supply and it's pretty neat. I'm already going round the house switching off various devices. Mind you I'm not sure about the accuracy as it's telling me my leccy bill should only be £3.21 a month !!!!!!! I wish!
It doesn't seem to work on individual power leads. I tried it on the kettle and it didn't work but it's fine on the mains supply to the whole house and it's got a remote display unit. Ironically the remote display unit is plugged into the mains and isn't battery operated
Must get a photo of it so you can see it. There's also a USB port on the diplay unit but there's no mention about it in the rather basic manual. I'd love to find out what the USB port can do I'll try it out shortly, curiosity always gets the better of me.
