Funny rubbing/knocking sound

Postby aminorjourney » Tue Feb 19, 2008 7:14 pm

Hi guys..

Well, the Banana has developed a bit of a naughty trick, involving a rubbing vibration through the cockpit when driving and a banging/knocking sound emminating from behind the driver's seat.

I think it's the plastic cage which protects the drive belt, but I'm not entirely sure.

Help???

(Will look at the manual maybe tongiht)

Right then. Here's an update.

Took the plastic cover off and drove the car and still had the sound. So I put that back on and took off the splined drive wheel. Checked the torque setting of all the bolts and found that the suspension leaf spring on the left side was really not at the required 50Nm! Tightened everything up and retorqued the wheel on.

Still getting a clattering sound every now and then and wondered if there was a little too much play on the same side's back plate. I'll look again if it gets worse, and check the bolts regularly for tightness.

In the meantime, I'll see how I get on.

Morale of the story? Make sure you use a torque wrench at all times when re-doing bolts up...

Now my car doesn't lurch to one side and sits square to the road, so that's got to be good ;)

Probably best leave it sitting there and not to drive it then. Seems to do a lot of lurching when you drive it !

Well, I finally found out what the problem was. It seems that there is a bearing on the rear axle which has stopped working and is now causing the axle to rub really badly on the left wheel backplate.

I don't currently have a bearing to fix it with so I'm going to have to take it steady for a few days. Then it's going to be a simple (I hope) case of replacing the broken bearing and all will be solved.

The main concern though is that the axle now has some pretty severe scoring on it. I'm hoping that the axle will be fine whe we've fitted a new bearing, otherwise it may be a new rear-axle :(:( :(

But ....

I've been on TV with the El, going down a run-way in Nottinghamshire.

...And I think that that is to blame for the current wheel issue!
