My Numax batteries have now done 600 miles and the max. range of my city-el is now down to about 15 miles.
I did not expect this loss in capacity to happen so quickly.
I am now looking for some new better (lead acid) batteries, any ideas?

My only advice is look for lead acid batteries that give at least C5 ratings, then fit the BIGGEST you can get or at the very least try and match the C rating to the drain your likely to give them or as close as possible.

The reason they are keeling over so quickly is sheerly due to the fact they are being operated way outside their spec. This is why forklits have such huge packs and are able to opperate long shifts.

I have now replaced my numax batteries with haze 110 ah (c/20) agm ones.
Supplied by Dragon Electric Vehicles, they have a c/1 capacity of 66 amp hours.
These batteries have added 9% to the total wieght of my city-el if you include me,
and yet range has gone up to 45 to 50 miles. 8)
The ammeter which I have now fitted shows a maximum discharge of about 100 amps,
at this rate the voltage sag is noticeably less.
I just hope these haze batteries last alot longer than those numax ones.
