New Ping battery reads 10 volts!

Postby badnewswade » Wed Jan 05, 2011 12:33 pm

Charged it up and everything seemed fine, and now this! Also some swelling seems to have occured. I'm not impressed. I did have to move the BMS after I charged it but nothing happened when I did this, no sparks, nothign to indicate that anything is wrong. Have written to Ping. Any tips? SHould I try charging it up again?

34 Watt Hours per mile, or > 700 MPG. What, me, smug?

Yaaay! Got it fixed! Good old Mr. Ping! He wrote to me straight away even though it was the middle of the night in China. I'm so impressed with his customer service that it compltely outweighs any problems with the battery.

Took it out for a four mile run and it's 39 volts (was 42.5v at the start). Is this normal?

Glad it's sorted. If that is a 12S pack, then the answer is that it will sit at around 39V or so when the surface charge has bled off. The nominal voltage of LiFePO4 cells is around 3.2V for most of their discharge curve, although they start at around 3.3V per cell. Hot off charge they will be around 3.6V per cell.

3.3V per cell gives you a pack voltage of 12 x 3.3 = 39.6V

3.2V per cell gives you 12 x 3.2 = 38.4V

So the ~39V you're seeing is pretty much spot on.

Hot off charge the voltage will be around 12 x 3.6 = 43.6V, but this will drop fairly quickly once the pack is disconnected from the charger.
