Connaught engineering have announced a bolt on hybrid system for diesel Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter vans.

An 8.7kW electric motor/generator charges a super capacitor during regenerative braking via an automatic clutch and varriable ratio transmission.

On acceleration from rest the motor provides assist to the diesel ICE up to 3000rpm where it cuts out.

Claimed 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The system is easily retrofitted into an existing vehicle.

I bet it's expensive but it looks like it would be fun to adapt to other applications!!

Looks like it might be a winner.
Just a bit of a shame when you consider the high performance cars that they also produce -- V10 engines are really not very kind to the environment.
Perhaps they are feeling a bit guilty in adding to the worlds Co2 emissions !!!
Or perhaps they are just using yet another government grant

I think the same about Tesla.
Paid for by money from Elon Musk (Paypal founder) Tesla's outlook is in direct contradiction to that of Elon Musk's other big project, Space-X, which plans to use billions of joules of energy sending tourists into space.

I think that perhaps,for the people at the top, there has been an agreement of some sort that they should offset some of their activities which are environmentally harmful with some which are not.

Either that or they have just found a way to make fuel efficiency a profitable business, which is long overdue isn't it !

Not sure that 'white van man' will be rushing out to buy the upgrade!

Actually Mercedese did this trick with the Smart car. As a corporation their CO2 footprint is for the whole group so projects like this compensate for the gas guzzlers and they get brownie points. None the less it's good to see some aftermarket bolt ons
