Hello Terry,

Well, you know I've got one, as you very kindly came and fitted some batteries, which are lasting well.

The bike's fine, except that I now have the front forks in bits as one side had seized over the winter.

While I've taken bikes to bits, I've never seen inside a pair of forks before, but as one was dry inside (!) it's obvious the oil has been leaking out from somewhere.

Two questions: Will I need new seals, and if so where am I likely to get anything that fits?

How much oil and what type should I put in?

The rear damper also looks as though it would benefit from a bit of TLC, but I'm not sure about getting that one apart. Would I be better off looking for a similar replacement? I'm sure Oxygen would have bought in a fairly standard shock from somewhere rather than made their own. Of course, this might well apply to the front forks too.

Hello Melcom

Dear Terry,

Many thanks for your reply, but I'm afraid you will have to bear with non-techies like myself.

I've never changed fork seals before, but do I gather from what you say that I won't be able to find any that fit anyway?

Also, what sort of oil and what quantities? The bike is sitting head down next to the garage at present, but I think I've managed to clean up the various bits. There was a LOT of dirt inside the forks, for some reason.

Well, it probably takes more than the half inch left in the bottom, which is why I was hoping someone could help me with the quantity. Can anyone help as to a general guide - ie how far up the inside of the forks should the oil come? I doubt the exact quantity is critical. The bottom unit is about 18 cm long internally, and the travel is no more than 10 cm. Also, is there such a thing as a standard fork oil, or are there different grades to choose from? (In which case...)

The fork seals have the following around the top:

BADSLSFD 30-40-6/12 . 5 I3 =CFW

The stanchions are about 29 mm in diameter and the outside diameter of the fork seals is about 40mm.

Hello Maclcom
I have found my not's on forks -- standard m/b fork seals 30-40-tc Bikers, Fratton Rd Portsmouth 1/2 price compred to the internet. No I did not have the volum?
Strip and clean reasembule Check Max Travel ie Stop and mark with ring of insulation tape that will not move find an "O"ring that fits the fork and will move.
Put 55 Mill of 7.5 fork Oil in forks reassembul slid O ring dowen to Seal put full preasher on the unit. check distanc from "O" ring to tape should be between 3/4 to one inch do not worray if it is more as it is simpel to put more Oil in after road test but a buger to tack it out# As a rull of thum as loung as you are using 1/2 the travall you are O.K.
Sorry I did not have the volum if you do want to top up. U 8) se no mor than 5Ml at a time.

Aha, great. I've located the right weight oil (the first few shops didn't have it) and have ordered some seals, so we'll be in business soon.

I didn't realise you needed so little oil - scarcely more than a shot of whisky!

It'll be great to get the bike back on the road again, especially if the weather lasts.

Many thanks,
