Long range lithium conversion

Postby timpootle » Fri Sep 05, 2008 8:17 pm

Well, the fun starts here. This thread will document my project to give a Berlingo 300+ miles range.

I now have photographic evidence of my big battery, being tested in China before shipment.

Image

That is 204 HiPower LiFePO4 200Ah cells, connected 51s4p to give 162v 800Ah.

More to follow, as things progress. Wish me luck.

Lithium conversion

Good luck Tim! I reckon the main drawback with the Berlingo is its limited range so I'll be fascinated to see how you get on with it. Have you bought another van to practise on or are you using your original vehicle? That is an impressive amount of Lithium! Having only recently moved house I'll be sticking with the old Nicads and keeping my fingers crossed they don't give up for a while yet. :)

With that much money riding on it you need more than just luck!

I can't help but think you're completely nuts spending that much money on them and really do hope they last you. Even at the prices petrol is at at currently that amount of money would take you a long long way

Tim, when are you expecting them to arrive n the UK?
I for one will be very interested in seeing how they perform.
Have you bought a BMS and charger as well or just the cells?
what is the total weight of all of those cells - will your vehicle be able to cope with them all. I bet you will have a very interesting battery box for them all.

I have got a Gwiz and would love to put this type of battery into it, but until I can find a pack that I can swap in that I can also afford it will have to wait.

OMG Tim...........your actually going to do it

First thoughts are ..........where on earth are you going to put that lot  and wasnt there a weight issue with them :?

This will be a VERY interesting thread and thanks for sharing it with us.

The question is will this make your EV have the longest range in the country, or even the world ? ( any demo vehicles dont count in my book as they are nothing more than look what we can do......cos they dont end up actually using them  )

I'm just thinking, "who gets dibs on the cells that don't fit in??"

Brilliant Tim, I hope it all goes to plan. Presumeably you are going to use the same controller (maybe not). I think it would be great if you could spare the time to document it with piccies, it may drive others to do the same (eh Chris).
