how can you convert from NiCd to LIon?

Postby tipidave1 » Wed Apr 28, 2010 7:04 pm

Being somewhat new to the world of electric driving, I was wondering what steps one would need to take in order to convert to a Lithium based based battery technology from a Nicad. I have a berlingo EV and wondered how I would need to change the charging software and controller. Any advice?

Evan Tuer has some details about his conversion to LiFePo4 on his website.

There's another LiFePo4 conversion by a group in the Czech Republic.

And there's a guy in Finland who has done a conversion.

... and me! viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1503

My motive is increased range, closely followed by not being able to get new NiCads.

Rob Sharpe is doing a lithium 106 following Evan's success. Evan has modified his controller to charge at constant voltage rather than the constant current the NiCads need (did I get that the right way around?) and added a separate BMS to look after his cells.

Other than that, I rather hope I can just connect it up and drive away!

I think the general issue is cost

Although it does seem to be coming down in price now a tadge.
