Controllers?????????????????????

Postby davall » Sun Jun 12, 2011 3:49 pm

Hi
I m building a small Trials/trail bike frm a Yamaha DT 5o
As per your sugestion Ive mounted a Turnigy80-100-A180Kv brushless outrunner motor
According to Kelly controllers they dont do a controller to suit
Can anyone advise me of a suitable controller & supplier???
They say the motor is brushless & sensorless so they cant help
I m new to this and am only finding my way
Regards.

Hi, from Ed the Bodgineer
Not sure what would be best, but I'll start with some basic questions
(then hope someone who does know will respond as well.....)
Can you post any details from the motor labels, such as voltage or watts or amps?
(Or am I creating confusion, perhaps these motors are not rated in those terms?)
Just trying to relate to the EAPC / "illegal-electric-scooter" motors and controllers I have lying around
In case one of those controllers would help, I have a couple of 24v.dc - and one 12v.dc - controllers surplus
Free to a good home, but pointless if they won't do the job
Only other guess I can make is to look on a model-aero forum, maybe ask what other people use?
All the best
Ed

Hi
Thanks for the reply
The motor is rated thus
Kv 180
Max power
7000W
Resistance 17ohm
Idle current 3.5 A
ASC 150 A
Input voltage max 48V
Kv 180 rpm/V
voltage range 20-48V
Non load current 3.3 A
Equiv to 60/80cc Gas engine
Everything s ready to go just waiting on a controller to suit the people at Kelly werent very helpful.
Hope this helps
BTW what makes the morors illegal??
Regards.

Hi again
The model aero guys use contollers that work best on high RPM I think they would struggle on Low RPM & Hi Torque

These are only guesses:
8640 rpm at 48v.dc / 150 amps ?
Wonder if a Curtis 48v.dc golf-trolley controller might do it ?
BUT..... CAUTION, you need a proper engineer's advice
Maybe EV parts in the USA
or
Jozzbikes
in Peacehaven, Brighton, UK
or
Model aircraft controller + some form of CVT to combine gearing - ratio and be controllable ?
I will look up a guy on this forum who has used out-runner motors, and has lots of real-world EV experience
Then I will post again

Not sure Kelly make anything for such a high revving sensorless motor. Doesn't this little thing belong in the model world?

Christ! As a sideline. Watch the video!

Can't see this motor lasting long for what you mean it to do but hey! Enjoy yourself :)

Did Jeremy not respond?
I recall quite a few posts by him
About a VERY large model aircraft motor and even about how to construct a controller to match

Surely if the helicopterfiend can find a controller, then maybe it's just down to gearing?

I used a high ("-ish"?) revving chinese 36v.dc scooter motor to propel a 26"-wheeled EAPC
I basically used the original small-pitch chain & sprockets (12:56?) to a 13-tooth bicycle-sprocket
I then welded a 48t bicycle chain-wheel to a Shimano 8-speed hub-gear rear sprocket
Went well, very well :D
A right piece of "Bodgineering" but it still works.....
Good luck, (keep trying)
Ed

PS
That model helicopter video!!!
That's not a model aircraft, THAT's a remote-control killer-scythe!!
No wonder the observers were back behind some wire-mesh
