Re: My new project
Well I've been running on the road for about a month now. It tops out at about 50mph. That's about what I hoped for on 48v with a 13:60 ratio. I tried 15:60 and although the chain was quieter, I coudn't get any more speed, just increased current, and the motor started to overheat and cut back the co...

Re: My new project
Yes, that should be by next task. As you can see, it's definitely a fair weather bike at the moment. The electrics under the tank should be fine, but the batteries need protection. I thought the cage should make a good frame to wrap a cowling around, with a matching aero screen, I'm just trying to f...

Re: My new project
Well finally got round to MOTing and getting her on the road. I've now got to go to the DVLA and get my new tax disc swapped for a proper free electric one. They did mention that they may want a letter from the garage that fitted the engine, so that would be me then! Anyway, I managed 40 miles so fa...

Re: My new project
Well it's taken me a week, going gradually nuts, but finally got the Sevcon controller to play ball. I still haven't figured out regen braking yet, but that's not a problem. I haven't had it out for a ride yet, but the motor is so much quieter. It makes a nice gentle hum as it starts, rather than th...

Re: My new project
Ed I'm surprised it's that much. Do the batteries generate much heat with normal use? Are you starting with batteries at room/garage temperature. It's been a super day today, but temperature dropping rapidly now, so the morning should be pretty dangerous. I do find wiring very therapeutic, especiall...

Re: My new project
Plodding along slowly, though with this weather not in any rush. Well I decided that as an incentive to figure out Sevcon programming, I would swap over from the Kelly unit before I get it MOT'd. I was quite surprised at the weight of the heatsink, I thought aluminium was light! Probably a bit of ov...

Re: My new project
Starting to put it all back together after painting. I always find nice new paint shows up anything not in decent condition, so end up replacing nuts, bolts etc, and will have to tidy the wheels some time.

Re: My new project
Thought this might be of use to someone, when I was looking for info on programming the Sevcon Gen4 I found all the software and manuals here http://www.heinzmann.com/en/electric-and-hybrid-drives/download-electric-and-hybrid-drives/cat_view/346-electric-a-hybrid-drives/358-download-software/468-syn...

Re: My new project
Yes, originally the Russians were licensed to make the M72 in 1956, which was a copy of the R71, and then the Chinese got hold of the tooling, and carried on for years. It was the standard army bike up until the 80's Plenty of them still in China, and common in US, but quite rare in UK with the tub ...

Re: My new project
I remember seeing a Quasar at our classic car show a couple of years ago. The design would suit an electric power train. As you can see from my frame, I am rather keen on protecting my expensive batteries! I first started with a bolt on design, but after a bit of fiddling, I came up with a permanent...
