Hi, How about something like the ceramic hair dryers mentioned in the Vidal Sasoon heater thread. That could blow warm or cool air through an insulated battery box to keep battery temp constant when charging or driving. The insulation should retain reasonable temp for a while when parked up. Nino.

Back on the upping voltage score, I would suggest checking in with someone like EVguru on whether the contactor coils etc.will be ok on the higher voltage.

Yes, sorry we wandered off the point there.

I don't have any ideas on the motor problem but a bit of lateral thinking brings me to the brakes and transmission. Anything sticking, rubbing or binding in there? wheel bearings even?

Interesting, I would have thought a new set of batts would hold at about 12.7 volts each when charged, so you should be getting about 76.2v or so. Are you sure your charger is working properly? Is it an industrial type charger which switches into float mode when it's finished? What's the pack voltag...

I think you'll find that the curtis controller will be happy enough at 84 volts as well. The last time I read their specs I seem to remember the overvoltage being set at 90 volts. might be a bit too close on a full charge, mind you. What's your pack voltage after charging?

Interesting, but what are the thundersky batteries?

They reckon them to be good for 3000 cycles at 70% DOD, which smacks of LiFePO4, but they recommend a charge voltage of 4.25 volts.

Has anyone got the lowdown on these and the prices?

Cheers,
Nino.

Might be an idea to discuss safe working practice while we're here. My usual trick is, if I have to work on a high voltage system when it's powered up (checking voltages at test points etc.) I make sure I'm not grounded (plastic or rubber soles) I use one croc clip and one probe on my test leads, so...

mainly because AC is a killer esp at high volts - and i dont like messing around with it I'm no engineer but I'm pretty sure that DC is a whole lot more dangerous than AC at high voltages. If you touch a high voltage DC terminal the muscles tense up and you can't let go, so you fry. With AC you get...

Jeremy,

Interesting example of Dr.Bass's posting.

Do you or any of the other guys here have an opinion on the viability of Dr. Bass's charging system?

It does seem magically simple.
