Free IET daytime event at Blue Lagoon, Hilsea Lido, Portsmouth on Weds 27th October 10:00 for 10:30
Details at... http://www.theiet.org/local/uk/south/so ... c-cars.cfm
Summary: In the last few years there has been huge progress in the development of electrically powered cars. The famous Toyota Prius has been around for many years and other hybrid vehicles are available and becoming more widespread. However the progress with fully electric battery powered cars has also been very strong in the last 2 or 3 years. Among the consequences is the building of the Nissan factory in the UK to produce electric cars and their batteries and also the manufacture of batches of electric BMW MINIs in Oxford.
This talk will explain and discuss the relative merits of 100% electric, and series and parallel hybrid drive trains, with examples of commercially available cars that use all these technologies. The talk will also cover two of the key enabling technologies: the new generation of lithium batteries and recent developments in electric motor technology. Highly efficient and compact motors for electric vehicles are being developed by our universities, resulting in new high tech spin-out companies in a most encouraging way, and examples of the products of a couple of these companies will be shown.
The roll out of 100% electric cars will be steady but slow and the very real problems will also be discussed, together with the solutions being proposed.
James Larminie is a Principal Lecturer and is Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Technology at Oxford Brookes University.

Portsmouth : 27 Oct (day) : Electric Car Lecture
XJ600 electric drag race project
Don't you love it when your project's "80% finished" ? It's so satisfying to know there's only 80% left to do...
