Batteries with quoted C1 ratings

Postby ChrisB » Mon May 28, 2007 12:18 am

Its not often you'll find companies willing to quote C1 ( 1hr rating ) on batteries, they are out there but hard to find and a bit specialised.
For us EV users we really need to be looking at the C1 rating in my view as we use such HUGH amounts of power.

I've found http://www.ultracell.co.uk/Ultracell.html are happy to quote C1 ratings in their pdf's 8)

There not massive batts but would be good for the battery bike peeps etc even the C5 boyz might like to check them out ??

Interesting. It looks like some of the larger batteries may be of use too to those rebuilding milk floats etc.

Perhaps we should start a database on here of people's experiences with various batteries. I know finding a good battery is the bain of every EV owner!

As you say Nikki, batteries are the backbone of EV's and can make or break an EV or EV project.
I've had a fair dealing with our old friends the flooded lead acid types a smaller amount with your gel type and having an interesting learning curve with the nicads in my van currently. Li-ion are just a pipe dream currently.

Certainly sticking to manufactures spec for lead acids seems mean they go the distance but then lead acids have been around since time began so if we dont know how to spec them it would be a daft world

ANOTHER *($%(*@! STUPID WEBSITE WITH A SHOCKWAVE PRESENTATION!

When will companies learn? I don't want to download a megabyte of useless &$%* just to view a website, even on broadband. I'm only going to press the 'Skip Intro' button anyway. I use the web to get access to information NOW.

At least you don't have to register to view the data sheets.

There's also no indication of pricing on line, which always puts me off.

For smaller batteries look here; http://acalonline.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=63_67

Do take note of the £15 delivery charge (for any size order)

They also sell the Kilovac EV200 contactor, which is a very nice piece of kit.

I've been talking to the Optima rep about making their batteries available for EV projects at a substantial discount.

The only concern is about making sure people don't just sell them on at a profit, but we're coming up with a scheme.

I must admit, I'm not a great fan of the flash animation.

Discount Optima battery eh? Which ones are we talking about? the next BVS Magazine will have an advert in it for them.

With Optimas what sort of power density are we looking at?

Re EVGuru's post above... I took up the issue of anoying flash intros with Ultracell's MD, Ms McGuinness, and she responded that the delay is due to other stuff being downloaded rather than the intro itself which is why you can't 'skip it' - initially, anyway.

I also asked for a quote for 120V worth of their UC 100-12's (100 Ah @ 12V) and they don't supply direct to the general public. Unfortunately, she did not mention where one can buy them, nor is this info apparent on their site.

A shame as they seem ideal for the EV market. Here is a link to the above battery's specs...

http://www.ultracell.co.uk/UC%20100-12.pdf

They go all the way up to 200Ah at 12V.

A search on Google revealed www.rechargeonline.co.uk and www.pentupenergy.co.uk who appear to supply some of Ultra Cells products but not anything bigger than about 70Ah. I have asked if they can supply the bigger batteries and at what cost and will post their responses.

More on UltraCell...

Postby martinwinlow » Wed Jun 13, 2007 7:58 pm

First response as follows:-

...Dear Martin,
We do not carry the UltraCell range of product but can offer some good quality alternatives. These are all sealed cyclic batteries used in electric vehicles and heavy duty marine applications.

UltraCell UC100-12 331mm L x 175 x 240 H at 31Kg

CSB EVX121000 12v 100AH qty 10 price each £ 101.49
Data sheet attached (511mm long)

Energy ADC100 12v 100Ah qty 10 price each £ 94.33
328mm L x 172 x 244H at 33Kg
AGM, long life, deep cycle 400+ cycles at 70% D.O.D

Energy SGEL100 12v 100Ah qty 10 price each £ 113.35
330mm L x 173 x 240 H at 36.5Kg
GEL filled, ultra deep cycle, long life, 500+ cycles at 80% D.O.D

Carriage for 10 units would be £45.

Availability would be 6-7 working days from receipt of order and payment.

From the above information you can see that both of the Energy batteries will fit dimensionally and I would like to draw your attention to the weight!

The quality, performance and life of any battery is due to the lead it contains and both the Energy batteries are heavier than the UltraCell.

I hope this is of use to you and ask you not to hesitate in contacting me if you have any questions. Thank you for your enquiry Martin.
