Battery Vehicle Society

I have acquired a lift motor from a skip. It has no details written on it at all, but it held a tag with the wording: 5 -075 ZL. The size is approx 6 inch dia by 16inch length. Can anyone shed light on what type of motor (kw etc) is it? Can it be utilised for into a car. Any information will be useful.

Ummmm, what sort of 'lift motor'?
Fork lift? Lift in a building?

Can you post some photos of it showing the whole thing, the drive end, the other end, the connections, any views inside showing brushes if it has any, etc.

If it was a 6" series DC motor it might be useful but also might be a bit small for a car. I have a 7" 3.1hp Club Car golf buggy motor in my compact tractor.

thanks for reply although without proper internet it is difficult for me to answer your questions! the motor is a elevator one i think.

my attempt at downloading images of the lift motor failed so please be patient and i will try and borrow another internet user's connection and get back to you. the 6 connectors have V
and W tags and a quarter inch dia spindle prodrudes from one end. thanks again for your help.

An elevator motor?

Hmmm, AC or DC? Six connections and V and W tags could mean it is a 3ph AC motor.
Does it have a controller that you can access?

Fork lift motors, or other series wound motors, are probably easier.
There is a whole section on DIY Electric Car on motors. The sticky at the top may be worth a read.
If you can get the details of the motor and some photos then it may be worth asking there as there are a few motor experts who may be able to give some good advice.

Must admit it looks like a standard 3ph AC mains motor that can be wired in either star or delta configuration, in my view not really suitable for an EV project I'm afraid.

Yep, I have a few of those still knocking about that I might dig out and either try to sell on ebay or weigh in.

If you have a controller then it might be good operating a lathe.

There is a project to develop an open source controller for these motors for EV use. It's still early days but the project can be found here.
