Have found another broadband connection in the local pub to be able to write this, although the toilet seat is a trife chilly!! many thanks for all your replies. it does look as if my Midas car will have to wait a while to source a more suitable motor. A pity because arent 3 phase motors AC supposed to be very efficient and reliable?

Yes, they are.
But where the AC motor is efficient then the DC series motor the AC controller can be less efficient then a DC series motor controller. In the end the efficiency might not be that different.

You do gain regen if you really need it but AC controllers tend to be more costly and DC pm motors can do regen too.

Any reason why you are going for AC over DC?

There are a few DC series motors on Ebay at the moment.
This seller has a few, here are three.

Fork Truck Breakers have lots of motors for £300.

hi again. this time at least my internet connection comes with a pub seat and a pint of good yorkshire beer. it does look like i need to find a decent dc motor to adapt to my car. my cousin has created a gas turbine electric driven car and so if i can sweet talk him into building a smaller version for me, that would be a great start! thats why i placed the lift motor query under the electric battery section because battery and motor need to be compatible dont they? thanks again for your help. its frustrating to have a motor which is as good as useless!
