Electric Bicycle update

Postby phil shepherdson » Mon Aug 03, 2009 3:39 pm

There seems to be a bewildering number of new and updated electric bikes out there at present.

for instance there is the new X bike from Powabyke which boasts 250W motor and lightweight Li Ion battery. Halfords seem to have expanded their range too.

Has anyone bought one of these or has a preference for another make?

I bought a conversion kit for my cheapo bike from

http://www.alienbikes.co.uk/page9.htm

It works very well and I am 18st  But on a diet now!

Drives me along at about 16-17mph, might get a bit more if you are lighter.

My commute is 13 miles each way, I charge at work.

I live in Thirsk so if you wanted to pop up and have a go on it your are welcome.

In fact I would lend it to you for a week or so if you want.

Peter

thanks Peter for your kind offer of trying the bike out. i will email you so that we can negotiate something when you are available. did you have any problems with Alien bikes buying wise/delivery etc as he appears a one man business? however it is just what i need to get started as i have just the bike for the conversion - Phil

Phil

He seems quite competent for a one man band. Some chinese soldering  in the kits etc so check all the plugs and sockets I re-soldered most of mine. Used his wheel but my slim tyre as his has a horrible chunky thing on with poor RR.

The motor is a two wire brushed type so probably could be operated with a simple switch instead of the controller if you wanted to mod it.

Might get a little more speed as well avoiding PWM controller losses.

PM me to arrange a vist, I am at home next four days and available every evening.

I'm very keen on the Urban Mover bikes. A few years ago, they weren't particularly good, but now they are some of the best built bikes around - with high quality components and an excellent build quality.
My new book is out: The 2011 Electric Car Guide is available from Amazon and all good bookshops.

I'm currently appear to be buying up all the "Bright bike FOLDe" folding electric bikes for some bizzare reason, bought one a while back and secured another over the weekend

Image

I'm quite taken with these little folding electric bikes, they seem fairly sturdy yet can very quickly and easily be folded down into the boot of the car, interestingly one is a twist grip opperation and this latest has something called "pedal assist" :?
I havent had a chance yet to actually look into it but as you pedal the motor then kicks in and provides assistance, the fast you pedal the more assistance you get, there is NO twist grip throttle

Anyhow one of these is going to be my project LifePO4 test vehicle 8)

More on that once the Li's arrive, reminds me think I'll check the tracking

I reject reality and substitute my own !!!!!!
