Mi mini conversion

Postby Teslas fag packet » Sat Aug 18, 2007 5:41 pm

well following on from our chat in the noob section, i thought i would at least go look at a microcar's final drive. much to the bemusement of the garage owner i might add. theres me under one of his cars with a tape measure in hand.

and i think i could fit in the diff and motor in fount of the other whilst still having the hight under the bonnet for stuff or more cells

nice one Paul

still i have to get a selvaged one yet, anybody... no ... dust..... anybody... no ... dust

I don't think I'd use a microcar final drive in a Mini. Microcars (or quadricycles to use the DVLA's term) are very lightweight and have a very low power engine usually no more than 20horse power. The 'gearboxes' are not up to much more than 40hp max. They make ideal EV conversions but I'd not recommend their components in a heavier 'regular' car

If you want to have any details about the drive I'm happy to go and measure mine up for you though.

It's not a regular car, it's a Mini!

Providing you're sensible about the peak torque, I think you should be fine. There's a fair margin in the gearboxes and the millage of an EV is relativly low helping offset any increased wear.

The CVT puts quite a load on the input shaft. If the drive from the motor to the gearbox had it's own bearing arangement then this load could be removed and give the gearbox an easier life.

Fitting motorcycle engines into kit cars subjects the transmissions to loads far in excess of those they were expected to cope with, but there don't seem to be many reports of failures.

What transmission is the Mega Truck using, after all that's designed to haul a payload?

This is true......

I would guess it's the same transmission but the Mega Truck is only either an 8hp diesel or Electric so I don't think they really expect it to be driven in the same way a car is expected to.

The weight of a Mini is approx 600Kg. The weight of the engine and 'sump with gears in' must be around 100Kg.

also it is very perceptive of you about the peak torque if it can be broken i like as not will

Some SERIOUS petrol head stuff at ZCars.

What exactly are you aiming to achieve with the Mini? as this is high performance competition stuff. Definitely a different league entirely to quadricycles.

How about some Clarkson stuff then ? You could always stick some rockets in the boot and point it down a ski ramp! ;) That'd get it moving!

There are one or two petrol heads in the forum I've had a Lotus and I've currently got a Ginetta G27 plus one of our members has one of if not the fastest ever MG Maestro ever to set rubber on Tarmac! Check out this thread for petrol head stuff
