Speedo

Postby floydster » Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:08 pm

Just wondering if any of the homebrew EV guys have fitted any sort of aftermarket speedo?

I swapped the gearbox and now my speedo is way out. I've been using GPS but I'm looking for a more permanent solution and I've been considering a push bike speedo with a magnet located in the wheel rim. I also have an old Palm Pilot lying around and was thinking of this

Any ideas are welcome.

Also, does anyone know where I stand legally? My understanding is that: -

1. a working speedo is not required as for the MOT
2. not having a working speedo is illegal
3. a push bike speedo will keep me legal

Correct in my view if we are talking about road use obviously, my EV's have used a calibrated bike speedo in the past. :)

There are a couple of places in Practical Classics which will recalibrate for you. You just have to tell them your wheel size and gear ratios!

Alot of kit car people use push bike speedos.
My brother did in his westfield, calibrated by following a 'proper' car, and then again when he borrowed someones GPS.

He didn't have to put it through an SVA (he re-built using teh same chassis, honest guv), but did get through lots of MOTs with no concerns.

Hope this is of help

Thanks folks. Looks like I'll be hooking up my spare bike speedo. Any suggestions for the best stuff to stick the magnet to the wheel rim?

A bicycle speedo is a common solution, but they're not very big and can be hard to read.

There are a number of products like this about;

I have had my magnet stuck to an alloy wheel rim with Araldite for 5 years without it ever coming unstuck and the bike speedo has served me well all that time.
