G-Wiz Owners Club

Postby MB » Fri Jun 15, 2007 1:05 pm

If you don't already know, there is a G-Wiz Owners Club which has a lively internet presence and approximately 400 members.

We promote the Battery Vehicle Society to G-Wiz Owners Club members, and a number of owners have joined the BVS as a result.

If you are interested in the G-Wiz and want to find out more about it, why not visit our site at www.g-wiz.org.uk ?

Ultimately, it would be good to bring the owners club completely into the fold of the BVS. The fact there are so many G-Wiz electric cars in the centre of London now is incredible and has lifted the credibility of electric vehicles considerably over the past few years: long may it continue.

The G-Wiz Owner's Club has been busy over the past few weeks.

Following on from the launch of the new G-Wiz i, there has been a lot of renewed interest from the press and which has been reflected in a lot of additional press enquiries from the club. We're currently assisting a couple of TV shows with cars and interviews which means there will be more electric cars appearing on our telly screens over the next few months.

After the TV appearance on Top Gear over Christmas, at least two people who had never heard of the G-Wiz before have bought themselves a G-Wiz. Since then, G-Wiz's have appeared in the ITV show 'Kingdom' and on BBC London Regional News.

Last week we had an informal get together at a superb venue in East London with great food and great companionship. The new managing director of GoinGreen, Steven Hartridge, attended the event, along with Keith Johnson (the outgoing managing director) and the new G-Wiz i was demonstrated and taken out for a test drive by a few people.

The new G-Wiz i is now available in the UK. For those who don't know about the new car, it is a significant rework of the G-Wiz ac-drive with vastly improved braking, more interior space, a new curved windscreen, improved seating position, a new frontal crash structure designed by Lotus and improved handling and ride.

The difference this makes is really significant. The new managing director of GoinGreen is 6' 7" tall and he can comfortably sit behind the wheel of the G-Wiz i and drive it - that wouldn't have been possible with the old G-Wiz.

The great thing with the owners club is that around half the members are not current electric car owners, and this was reflected in our meeting. A number of people who came along had not had a chance to try out a G-Wiz before and this was a great opportunity for them to see the latest and greatest version and talk to some enthusiastic owners along the way.

Finally, The G-Wiz Owner's Club hit another milestone yesterday morning, with the signing up of our 500th member, making us the largest electric car owners club in Europe.

Just a quick update on the owners club. Membership continues to grow at the rate of around 10 a month. We regularly get asked to supply cars for TV shows or do interviews with the press, which we're handling through a team of volunteers.

We are also working on an alternative battery replacement solution with the aim of being able to replace all the batteries in the G-Wiz for a total cost of around £500, rather than the £1700 price quoted by GoinGreen for the official replacements.

We feel it is important to offer an alternative, because as G-Wiz's get older, they're going to depreciate to the point where the batteries are worth more than the car. When this happens, G-Wiz's are going to end up on the scrap-heap come battery replacement time. It's not an issue just yet, but I would expect this to be a problem in 1-2 years time, so now is the time for us to be resolving that problem.

The cheap-n-cheerful solution will give half the range, but will also weigh less than half the weight, so performance should be considerably improved.

Because of the lower cost, it should persuade people to keep on wizzing well on into the future instead of ditching the cars when the batteries pack up.
