Other Electric Vehicle websites

Postby booboo » Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:37 am

Just browsing the net for anything electric vehicle orientated & came across these ;

http://www.steveselectrics.co.uk/

http://www.bluebirdautomotive.com/

www.alke.com

I just love the electric Bluebird, and the 21st century van is quite funky.

That is an old site for Bluebird. Their new site is www.BBIG.com - although that is just a holding page at the moment.

BBIG (the new name for Bluebird) looks like they'll have some exciting stuff available very soon. They've been busy doing some deals recently. Details in a future edition of 'Plugged In' magazine.

I'm also hoping we'll have an article on the Electric Bluebird land-speed car in a future edition of the magazine, which was driven by Don Wells - the Grandson of Donald Campbell.

The XDV electric van on the Bluebird Automotive site was a concept/prototype vehicle that did not go into production. Their current production model is the QEV range of commercial vehicles. I've driven one and its pretty good - it has a five speed manual gearbox, has good performance and is pretty good to drive too.

They also have an electric version of the Optaire bus which I have seen driving around at their Welsh factory.

It's very old news and I'm afraid I feel the whole project was a disaster from start to finish.

They grabbed a lot of publicity and spent a LOT of money and only raised the UK record to 137mph.

A school on the South coast built a car that did 120mph (I think) in the under 500Kg class.

Roderick Wilde got a road legal Ford Taurus to an American record of 135mph.

The (then) FIA record of 215mph achieved with an 'off the peg' streamliner chassis, $5000 controller, two $1500 motors, and two 360 volt strings of 26Ah Hawkers, impresses me much more.

Does it matter Paul ??? :? the main thing WAS the fact that they did it and may have helped put EV's in what might have been a better light rather than the monolistic milk float view so many people have of EV's in the UK

Yeah so its all a bit old hat but who cares its interesting all the same especially to those who may not have even realised we had a stab at the record :wink:

How about a BVS attempt on the record :P

Quest streamlined trike, 34 kg http://www.velomobiel.nl/
Etek/Alltrax motor and controller plus contactor and wiring 16 kg
40 Ah/72 V Thundersky lithium ion battery pack 32 kg
Pilot 65 kg
Total weight 147 kg

According to the power calculator here: http://www.kreuzotter.de/english/espeed.htm
assuming the largest tyres available,
the power requirement to take this vehicle to 140 mph (225 kph) is 11.25 kW.
All we need is someone daft enough and skinny enough to volunteer as pilot.

The trouble is that you would just join Adam Harper in land speed record obscurity.

There are standards to be observed for official records.

If you want to ignore such things then you have to concede breaking the sound barrier on land to the Americans in about 1975!

International records are set acording to FIA or FIM and UK records to MSA or ACU.

They are the people who are going to RECORD your record and you have to build vehicles and perform runs to their standards.

Awww, but life's too short for standards. Surely all you have to do is perform a timed run in two directions within a given time. Or do you get marks for style as well?

I was just agreeing with your point that the present UK record is pretty feeble. It wouldn't take a major investment programme or R&D budget to make a big improvement on it. Or are the relevant rules crippling in some way?

He is still going strong ;

A sort of Sinclair C5 main dealer, as opposed to Mark at www.c5alive.co.uk being more of an independent specialist :P
